“Parenting Addicted Teens and Young Adults
Through Their First Year of Recovery"
Presented by Barbara Krovitz-Neren, M.A.
Parents play a major role with recovery management of their adolescents and young adults who have been to treatment for addiction or mental health challenges. This workshop will teach you about the effects of addiction and mental health challenges on parenting; the five critical steps for parents to reclaim their families and the lecture will also allow the audience to explore creative programming to support these parents. Barbara Krovitz-Neren spent the past four years researching and exploring this area with adolescents and young adults newly in recovery and their parents. You will hear the responses directly from these kids on what they need from their parents, the effects of addiction on their relationships and what they wish their parents knew about them. Also, in July, her new book will be released from Central Recovery Press, Parenting the Addicted Teen: A 5-Step Foundational Program.
Participants will experientially and didactically learn about:
* The effects of addiction on parenting
* The 5 key strategies that help parents detach from addiction to reclaim their parenting and their families.
* Research that was done to understand what kids needs from their parents
* Creative support programming for parents of addicted kids
About the Speaker
Barbara Krovitz-Neren, M.A. has been a youth and parenting advocate for 35 years. Currently, she coaches parents who have teens and young adults who are chemically dependent or have mental health challenges and also consults with programs to enhance parent involvement in recovery. She co-created programs for elementary-age children of alcoholics as a pioneer in the addiction field 35 years ago and worked with educators, service providers and parents. She is the founder of Competent Parents, Confident Kids and has created a new program through her work and research with thousands of children and families called “5 Steps of Foundational Parenting.” These steps teach parents to take back their parenting and restructure their addicted family to one of health and recovery. She studied mindful-based stress reduction for adults and children at University of Massachusetts and University of Minnesota. Her work on behalf of the children and families she has served has earned her outstanding recognition awards.
