"Substance Use Disorders in the Workplace"

January 27, 2017

Presented by Melinda G. Drake, PhD

Please join us for a very informative presentation on Substance Use Disorder in the Workplace, January 27, 2017.  Presented by Dr. Melinda G. Drake, LCSW (CA, NY & HI), LISW CP & AP (SC).

Employees who use drugs are twice as likely to request early dismissal or time off and are two and a half times more likely to have absences of eight days or more. Substance Use Disorders among employees can also increase employee turnover. Individuals with drug or alcohol problems are more likely than non-substance abusers to report having worked for three or more employers in the previous year. Turnover is expensive for employers. Replacing an employee can cost from 25% to almost 200% of the employee’s annual compensation—not including the loss of institutional knowledge and service continuity and the damage to co-worker productivity and morale that can accompany employee turnover. Reducing employee substance abuse can help employers decrease health care costs, reduce workplace injuries and improve productivity. This training focuses on developing an understanding of addiction as a chronic disease that can be managed successfully.

Objectives:

Participants will develop understanding on:

· Increasing utilization of EAP services to help employees with substance use disorders
· Respecting employees’ privacy
· Reducing stigma in the workplace
